Kevan Hall shines at IWFW

Designer to the stars, Kevan Hall, did not disappoint when he showcased his Spring 2008 collection at the closing reception of the Islands of the World Fashion Week. Under the theme, “Africa: A Safari,” Hall presented his interpretation of African style in soft muted colors. Using accessories and fabrics designed by African artisans, Hall explained that his designs also paid tribute to a variety of African tribes.
“I enjoyed using fabrics designed and created by artisans in Africa,” said Hall. “The use of these fabrics will not only show their artistry but also aid in supporting their villages.”
The showcase was a mixture of sophistication and western sensibility while reflecting on Africa-the motherland. Influences for this collection came from the Dinka, Maasai, and Zulu tribes – with special emphasis on zebras, antelopes and leopards.
Hall pointed out that in this collection, he paid homage to his African roots. “This season I took a look back at my personal roots as well as gave back,” he said. “This also gave me the opportunity to raise awareness .”
And the fabrics used did just that. Using mud cloth, painted twill, tattoo matelasse, crushed organza and Kalahari printed chiffons to create the chicest safari jackets, tailored vests, embroidered dashikis and luxurious evening separates, Hall succeeded in producing looks that were simple yet complex with the use of luxurious fabrics and intricate details.
He explained that the rich colors used in the African beadwork of the Maasai set the tone of his designs. The deep reds, turquoise, amber, peridot and jade co-exist with the natural beauty of the landscape palette of sand, grass, gold, alabaster and sky blue – colors indigenous to Africa.
“I am thrilled to use the authentic jewelry of the Maasai tribe, one of the few tribes that have retained their ancient customs while making their way into the twenty-first century. As I look at Africa, I can only highlight its beauty and people.”
As models strutted on the runway, the audience sat captive in admiration of Hall’s latest collection. The end result was a resounding standing ovation.
“This designer was really worth watching,” said Laura Adderley, a patron at the event. “I really would have been disappointed if I had missed the opportunity to see his designs in person.”
