ISLANDS OF THE WORLD FASHION WEEK TAKES CENTRE STAGE
October 29, 2008 -After months of preparation, the organizers of the ‘Islands of the World Fashion Week,’ are pleased to announce its official launch on Wednesday, November 5. The four-day spectacle will showcase the collection of 38 new and established designers representing 12 island states.
“This is a positive event for The Bahamas, creating opportunities for local and international designers, models and others involved in fashion. Travelers to The Bahamas will have another fun activity to attend and fashion buyers will have additional choices,” said Owen Bethel, President of Mode Îles, Ltd, and founder and organizer of the event.
As the hottest ticket in town, designers will have the opportunity to showcase a series of beautiful garments, including couture, ready-to-wear, swimwear, bridal wear, casual wear and accessories. Fashion Week commences at the Hilton with runway shows starting as early as 10:00 and will officially kick off at a gala reception at Atlantis that evening.
In addition to being a unique opportunity for talented fashion and accessory designers,
the event will showcase The Bahamas and will feature several locales including the Retreat Gardens of the National Trust, Graycliff, Nygard Cay and The Marley Resort.
During the week, patrons will also have an opportunity to view the designs of international guest designers, Peter Ingwersen of NOIR.Illuminati, Nick Verreos from BRAVO’s Project Runway and world renowned designer, Kevan Hall, who will close out the week of activities.
Even though the event is not a competition, designers will have the opportunity to vie for three recognition awards in the categories of Sustainable Eco-Fashion and Culture and Fashion and the NextGen Designer Award. Additionally, judges will select five designers to receive Seals of Excellence awards, in recognition of their attention to quality and detail with an international appeal. The panel of celebrity judges include Nolé Marin (America’s Top Model), Paris-based designer, Alphadi, former Fashion and PR Director for Saks Fifth Avenue, New York, Susan Stein, Nick Verreos (Project Runway) and Peter Ingwersen (NOIR.Illuminati II). Former Versace Executive, Tomas Frenes, will serve as Executive Producer for the event.
In keeping with the event’s focus of drawing attention to global issues, including poverty alleviation, environmental concerns and HIV/AIDS, celebrated designer and philanthropist, Kenneth Cole, will be presented the Humanitarian Designer Award for his work in turning his label into an educational tool on the scourge of HIV and AIDS and other community-related issues.
Major sponsors for the event include the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, international courier, DHL, Yves Saint Laurent Cosmetics, American Airlines, Everlast Productions and BahamasWeekly.com. The event is endorsed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific & Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
