IWFW 2010 Opens Runway 1 in Grand Style!

11/11/2010 11:35:00 PM

Sounds of goat-skinned drums permeated the halls of the British Colonial Hilton on Thursday, November 11, as dancers of “Silk &Steel” filled the runway with an ethnically-inspired routine, signaling the official opening of “Islands of The World Fashion Week” 2010!Scores of fashion enthusiasts were treated to a myriad of fresh, island-inspired prêt a porter and couture designs, through the talents of veteran and “runway virgins”, including first time attendees, David Rolle and Whitney Miller; both competing for the title of NextGen Designer.  Rolle’s collection was dark and mysterious; a pleasant twist to social commentary as his models made their way down the runway handcuffed!

He says, “Fashion is an art-- it inspires.  I wanted to focus on war around the world.

Why are we still having war between countries, where the focus should be on helping

countries that need it?” He adds, “My collections represent the advancement of fashion

design in The Bahamas.”

Also in the lineup were IWFW runway veterans Harl Taylor BAG (The Bahamas), K. Bobby (Jamacia) and ICandy Swimwear (Bahamas).  Revealing the 2011 collection, Harl Taylor BAG captivated the audience with the introduction of the male bags, male and female belts and the signature bag of the evening; “The Junkanoo BAG”. K. Bobby Designs added a bit of spice to the catwalk, bringing the heat of hometown Jamaica, with trendy

leopard prints, vibrant oranges, and browns.  Not to be outdone, swimwear designer Margo Ga of ICandy Swimwear, made the catwalk light up as her models walked out with sparkles, correlating with her jewel embellished pieces.  “This is by far the most exciting introduction to Fashion

Week” says Mr. Kedar Clarke, Mode Îles Ltd. Operations Manager. “All of the designers, models and our production team have worked hard to earn this exposure, and we anticipate a great showing during the rest of the 2010 Islands of The World Fashion Week.”

In the “Eco-Fashion” presentation, designers Harl Taylor BAG (Bahamas), David Rolle (Bahamas), Oliver Tolentino (Philippines), K.Bobby (Jamacia) and Michel Chataigne (Haiti), showcased their best interpretation of merging eco-friendly elements with their design creativity. Designer Oliver Tolentino says that he embraced the essence of his native land through the use of pineapples, raw silk, and fresh water pearls; eco-friendly elements used by the designer to promote sustainability.

Ending the evening with bang was international designer Jay McCarroll of the hit reality series, Project Runway. McCarroll designs reflected a whimsical color wheel as each design gradually progressed in color and style. The previous evening, IWFW 2010 guest and the public were treated to the official debut of McCarroll film “Eleven Minutes” at Galleria Cinemas West, where Jay surprised attendees and opened himself up to critical reviews after the film.

Runway 2 on Friday 12 November promises to be fashion frenzy as IWFW design competition winner Theodore Sealy, debuts his “Bahama Handprint” sponsored collection, alongside other island-based designers and international designer “Indashio” from the USA.
