Nassau, Bahamas -- When one thinks of fashion; coconuts and skeleton umbrellas do not come to mind. Neither do sea grapes, conch shells or sprinkles of white powder sand. In fact, you may be asking yourself, “What does that even have to do with fashion?”

Well these were all a part of the runway show for the nominees of the Sustainable Eco-Fashion Award. Countries represented included The Bahamas, French Guyana, Jamaica, Madagascar and Trinidad and Tobago.

One of the major nature inspired show stoppers for the audience was the work of Patrick Lafrontiere, designer from French Guyana and nominee for the Sustainable Eco-Fashion Award. Talk about eccentric! Lafrontiere is such a die-hard fan of utilizing nature in everyday wear, he even had his signature palm fabric weaved into his pair of converse tennis shoes!

But palm woven tennis shoes were just the tip of the iceberg for Lafrontiere’s debut at IWFW! The real attention grabber was his earthy brown coconut themed collection that sent the audience erupting with chatter and applause.

With no hemlines, jagged patchwork, and an asymmetrical design, everything was unconventionally held together with tree sap. As the model took her stride on the catwalk, Lafrontiere’s art almost looked alive.

When asked how he felt about the show, Lafrontiere said, “It was wonderful to be in The Bahamas participating in a showcase highlighting his unique fashions inspired by nature.” Even via translator where words and ideas get lost in translation, Lafrontiere’s energetic attitude was hard to mistake that he really was ecstatic about his debut at IWFW!

Lafrontiere certainly made waves at the opening of the second edition of Islands of the World Fashion Week (IWFW). A veteran designer, Lafrontiere was also featured in last year’s Ethical Fashion Show in Paris, France and this year’s Ethical Fashion Show in Milan.
