It’s truly better in the Bahamas!

By Tara Bastian

November 7, 2008 - INTERNATIONAL fashion patrons and Bahamians alike got a taste of the Bahamas like they have never seen before. The Ministry of Tourism hosted a cultural evening at the Bahamas National Trust. The event truly wowed and excited its guests with an array of native dishes, fire dancing and Junkanoo presentations.
The Ministry transformed the National Trust into a 1950’s Bahamian style backyard, adorning the venue with clotheslines, wash buckets and scrub boards. The setting provided a look into the historical Bahamian way of life, creating a buzz among the fashion photographers, designers and writers.
According to Martella Matthews, Senior Executive at the Ministry of Tourism, this event provided the perfect opportunity to showcase The Bahamas. “We are so ecstatic to be partnering with Islands of the World Fashion Week,” said Matthews. “We saw this as an event with a lot of potential to propel the Bahamas even further on the international scene, especially through the country’s budding fashion industry”.
Matthews added that in planning the event, the goal was to share the Bahamian culture. “We wanted to share our culture, cuisine and our way of life with visitors in hopes of enticing them to return for next year’s fashion week and also to return on their own”.
And entice them they did, as guests dined on traditional Bahamian dishes-everything from peas soup and dumpling to Keith’s chicken in the bag. After they had their fill of the native foods, guests were entertained with the sights and sounds of local talent including, the Bahamas National Youth Choir, local Bahamian entertainer Metelus Chipman, and popular limbo dancer, “Action”. These noteworthy performers mesmerizeded the crowd, pulling unsuspecting patrons to join in their shows. Soon thereafter, the pulsating sounds and infectious energy of Junkanoo group, Colors, paraded toward the crowd. Guests were still dancing, long after the cow bells and goatskin drums had cooled off.
American Journalist, Anthony Pierre of Runway News (based in New York) expressed his excitement for the event, noting that the small details made the event extra special. “I was able to see first hand what it means to be Bahamian- I love the rich culture and the fact that there is so much emphasis placed on heritage,” said Pierre. “I loved the potato sack trousers, I loved the gin and coconut water, I loved the Junkanoo dancers- I loved it all!”
This was an event that all could appreciate and learn from. The evening provided a look into all things Bahamian-past and present and it showed why it’s truly better in The Bahamas.
